Warped La Hacienda First Growth

Inspired by the wine world’s prestigious “first growth” designation, Warped Cigars announced the La Hacienda First Growth in March 2020 as a more amped up take on its popular La Hacienda line. Using higher priming leaves from the original blend, the First Growth aims to deliver more body, spice and sweetness courtesy of Nicaraguan corojo wrapper, binder and filler leaves from AGANORSA Leaf, plus some criollo in the filler for additional complexity.

Initially set for a Fall 2020 release in a 4 1/2 x 48 petite robusto, the First Growth would face delays, finally landing in retailers’ humidors in September 2021 in a slightly altered 4 x 50 vitola. The near 18-month wait didn’t affect the price though, with the First Growth carrying an accessible $8.95 MSRP per cigar sold in boxes of 25.

The petite robusto size shows excellent construction, with tight seams, well-applied caps and oily, veiny wrappers the color of dark chocolate. Aromas evoke blackberry jam and nuts, while the palate brings layers of peppery spice, earth and cream with a texture just shy of chewy. Balanced yet full-flavored, the First Growth delivers nuanced Nicaraguan leaf in a complex and satisfying smaller smoke worthy of its ambitious name.
